Acrylic Nails | My Experience

Hello lovelies,

Today I wanted to talk about nails! Have you tried out acrylics nails before? Maybe you wear them all the time or have never worn them at all!

In todays post I wanted to share my experience with acrylic nails, how I got on with them, what products were used and how well they lasted.

I got my first set of acrylics done when I was 15 I was going on holiday with my family and I thought it would be fun to try something a little different rather than the usual paint or shellac. I loved the whole experience of getting them done, the lady was lovely and chatty and I was really happy with the end result. My first set of acrylics cost me around ยฃ20 which I think is pretty good. The nails latest just under 2 weeks by this time they were beginning to lift and the sides, bearing in mind I was applying suncream and going in the pool daily for 10 days so I’m sure it had an affect on how long the nails lasted. I went for a coffin shape and they were pretty sort as far as acrylics go because it was my first time having them done. I was really happy with the colour it was a very bright coral which was a bit out of my comfort zone but I was glad I went for it. The nail growth underneath was pretty good although I will say my natural nails felt as though they had been weakened and were a little bendy which i was expecting as I had heard acrylics can do this.

My second experience with acrylics was a little different i was a year older. This time it was the summer holidays and i thought it would be nice to try acrylics out again as i hadn’t had them for a while. The difference this time was that i went to a nail bar. The staff in the particular place i went to were very nice but not very chatty them seemed to talk amongst themselves most of the time which i was completely fine with. This was my first time going to a nail bar and i was pretty impressed with the appearance of the place, it was very clean and sanitary which is what you want. I picked a pink colour which i loved and went for a square nail as it was different to what id had done before. I thought the look of the nails was really good and they did the full set in about 45 minutes compared with my first experience which was about 1.5 hours. I believe part of the reason why they were faster is because the salon was using an electric file which of course is quicker than doing all of the filing by hand. I did think they were a little rough with my nails as the drill did get a little warm but it wasn’t anything the complain about. These nails lasted around 2 weeks also, as i went longer with the length i wasn’t sure if that would effect it but it didn’t seem to. I am unsure of the brand this salon used on my nails but the result was lovely. After having these acrylics on my natural nails were again a bit soft when i took the acrylic off but i filed them down so there wasn’t much chance of them snapping. I paid ยฃ23 for this set acrylics which i think was reasonably priced for a salon and the service they provided. Unfortunately i don’t have picturesย of the first and second time i got acrylics as it was quite a long time ago but i hope the recent ones make up for it!DSCN1232

The next set of acrylics have to be my favourite. I went to a lovely little hairdressers/ beauty salon, i go to this salon quite regularly to get shellac on my nails. They had an offer going for 50% off of any nail treatments, so i jumped at the chance to try out a set of their acrylic nails. Without the discount a full set of acrylic nails would have been ยฃ30 and for the quality of the products i can understand why they charge this amount. This salon is one of the more expensive places to get your nails done but i believe for the service and the products it is worth the little bit more on the price tag. When i came in i was greeted and offered a hot drink which i hadn’t had before in any other place i had been to. Once i’d sat down the lady started a conversation with me and chatted to me throughout the whole time which was great as I’m rather shy these sort of situations can be awkward for me but i was made to feel very comfortable. I went for coffin/ ballerina shaped acrylics this time and the shade from CND shellac called unearthed which as you can see it a taupe/ grey colour that i loved. All of the products used to create these acrylics were by the brand CND, i really do think that this brand is the best for quality and my nail technicians application was great she spent a lot of time making sure i was happy before moving onto the next steps and so forth. These nails lasted me just over two weeks and i had no lifting and there was a little bit of growth at the top of the nail. All of the filing was done with a hand file so it wasn’t too harsh at all and the nail polish she added onto lasted the full two weeks with no chips or any sign of wear.ย

In conclusion i have been happy with every time i have had acrylics done, but some more than others. I really do think that if you pay that little bit extra you can get a better result in the end. With my most previous experience I didn’t experience and brittleness of my nails and they didn’t feel weak at all. In fact they actually felt a lot stronger which i found very bazaar as i went expecting the complete opposite so was very pleasantly surprised!

I really hope you enjoyed this post, it was a little different so let me know if you liked this more of a “story time” sort of post in the comments!ย I’d also love to know your opinion on acrylic nails.

Thanks for reading ๐Ÿ™‚

Your nails look lovely!! I’ve worn acrylic nails for about 7years. No doubt about it, they do tend to mess up your nails. I used to do acrylic nails as s side hustle as well, and I loved doing nail art on my clients.

At the end of 2018, I discovered a small little home-based salon in my neighbourhood, who only worked with infinity gel. I was a bit sceptical as gel never seemed to last long on my nails, but I tried it out. Up to this day, I have never gone back to getting acrylics. The gel they use has been so good on my nails that my own nails have grown out as nice and strong as acrylics, even as long!

Nowadays, people don’t believe me when I tell them that these are my own nails with gel on, because it looks too good to be true haha. I still love the look of acrylics, and for some people like nail biters etc, this is a great way if adding some length and strength to their nails.
    Great post!!

    1. Thanks for your comment, is this like hard gel or polygel? I have heard of both but never tried them out I canโ€™t seem to find anywhere clear by that do this type of treatment but would love to give it a go! I love getting acrylics but tend to leave it quite a while in between to give the natural nail underneath a break. I can imagine your nails have gotten a lot stronger as by just having normal gel on top of my natural nails seems to strengthen them quite a bit! โค๏ธ

  4. Your nails are FLAWLESS! ๐Ÿ’› I donโ€™t get my nails done very often because I feel like the acrylic damages my real nails and the after effects hurt so bad โ˜น๏ธ Maybe I took them off wrong? I have no idea but I havenโ€™t been back in a whole year after that experience.

    1. Thank you so much! Acrylic can damaged be the natural nails if itโ€™s applied wrong or they are too harsh with the filing before hand. Also take care when removing them as damage can also be caused then, the best way to remove acrylic is with acetone and am orange stick to gently remove the product from the natural nails. After having acrylics on I always make sure to coat the with cuticle oil and a nice hand cream. I would suggest going to a Salon that used CND products as I found they had the best results and it after taking them off I discovered the acrylic had strengthened my nails which has never happened to me before! Thank you so much for reading lovely ๐Ÿ’—๐Ÿ’—

  5. Great post and your nails are so cute! I love getting acrylics because I love having long nails and the coffin shape is my favorite. I had to stop getting them for a while because they made my nails so weak but hopefully after a few weeks of letting them breathe and finding a good shop I can get them again ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Thank you lovely ๐Ÿ˜Š I donโ€™t get acrylics very often but when I do I love it! I canโ€™t grow my natural nails too long as I find they snap so itโ€™s nice to have longer nails once in a while! I love wearing gel over natural nails though as I find it does strengthen them! Thanks for reading โค๏ธ

    1. Thank you so much for the kind comments! Iโ€™m glad you enjoyed reading. I edit all of my photos the same way, I just up the brightness if I think itโ€™s a bit dark and then add a filter called provia I think, I really like the way it makes all of the pictures look! X

  8. I really liked reading this post Chloe! Iโ€™ve had a few experiences of acrylic nails and I really donโ€™t think Iโ€™d ever get them again! Although they look lovely and last quite a while, the state my natural nails are left in afterwards is terrible so Iโ€™m sticking to polish. Like you they weaken and break really easily, Iโ€™m also left with bumpy nails too which isnโ€™t a grea look lol! I paint my own nails using gel polish and use a UV light to set them, lasts about a week so thatโ€™ll do me! I love the colour of your taupe nails, theyโ€™re lovely!

    1. Thank you for reading! Yes, I totally understand you, that being the reason why I only get them every few months I find having acrylics on really helps my nails to grow with out snapping. When I get them taken off I get a gel manicure over the top and they seem to stay ok at the moment! Xx

  9. Love this post and I love the shape and color of your acrylics! I had acrylics for a long time when I was younger and I had the same experience with my nails being weak from the filing. I tried Gels a few months ago and had the same experience. I love the look and the way that they last for a few weeks but I don’t like that my nails are weak and short for a while afterwards.

    1. Thank you so much lovely! That is the only problem I find with acrylics but as I said the last place I went to was amazing after having them taken off they actually felt stronger it was very strange! I would definitely recommend a salon that does CND! X

  10. I would be so afraid of breaking them and having it hurt ๐Ÿ™ˆ but they look gorgeous! My nails grow so quickly, I donโ€™t think it would be worth it for me to get acrylics (it would take constant touch-up work)

    1. Thank you so much! Yes, your natural nails are fabulous I wish I could grow mine out as long but they just snap! I have never actually broken any of my acrylics, but I can imagine it might hurt a bit! X
